Eagles Star A.J. Brown Out for Home Opener Due to Hamstring Injury - What's Next for Philly?

2024-09-15

In a significant blow to the Philadelphia Eagles, superstar receiver A.J. Brown has been officially ruled out of the team’s home opener against the Atlanta Falcons, as announced in the latest injury report. This unfortunate turn of events comes after Brown sustained a hamstring injury during practice on Friday. After missing Saturday's session and initially being listed as questionable, the Eagles downgraded him on Sunday, marking the first regular-season game he will miss since joining the team in 2022.

Brown has been a standout performer, recording five catches for 119 yards in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Notably, he ranks third in the NFL for total receiving yards since the start of the 2022 season, amassing an impressive 3,071 yards—trailing only Tyreek Hill (3,663) and CeeDee Lamb (3,169).

With Brown sidelined, the Eagles are turning to Jahan Dotson, their recent acquisition and the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Dotson, who previously played two seasons with the Washington Commanders, had an impressive record of 84 catches for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Eagles secured Dotson and a 5th-round pick in a trade that involved giving up a 3rd-round pick and two 7th-round selections just a few weeks ago on August 22.

Additionally, the Eagles may activate practice squad receiver Parris Campbell for the game. Campbell, a 2nd-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, spent training camp with the Eagles and could provide an extra option in the receiving corps.

It’s worth noting that A.J. Brown also missed the Eagles’ wildcard loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January due to a knee injury, but he has otherwise demonstrated remarkable durability, playing in 37 consecutive regular-season games since December 2021, when he was with the Titans.

In his career, Brown has participated in 78 of a potential 84 games, and remarkable milestone was achieved on Friday in São Paulo, where he surpassed 6,000 career receiving yards, becoming the 14th-fastest player in NFL history to reach that mark.

As the Eagles prepare for their critical matchup against the Falcons, all eyes will also be on rookie receiver Johnny Wilson, who played 10 snaps in his NFL debut against the Packers but remains questionable for Monday night. Currently, the only active wide receivers listed without injuries are DeVonta Smith, Dotson, and Britain Covey. The depth chart may rely heavily on these players as the Eagles aim to maintain their competitive edge without their star receiver.

Will the Eagles be able to rally without A.J. Brown? Fans are eagerly awaiting the kickoff to see how the team adapts to this unexpected challenge!
