In a stunning achievement, Duke University's Cooper Flagg has been honored with the coveted Wooden Award for 2025, solidifying his position as one of the greatest freshman talents in college basketball history. This recognition places Flagg in an elite group as only the fourth freshman ever to win the award.
The Wooden Award, which celebrates the most outstanding men's college basketball player, was announced on ESPN's "College GameDay" this past Saturday. Flagg's impressive performance outshone his competitors, including Auburn's Johni Broome, Florida's Walter Clayton Jr., Alabama's Mark Sears, and Purdue's Braden Smith.
Throughout the second half of the season, Flagg established himself as the frontrunner for the award, demonstrating exceptional skills on the court that led Duke to both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships. Notably, this marks Duke's first Final Four appearance since the departure of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. Flagg's accolades don’t stop there; he also clinched the ACC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year titles and is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft.
Entering the national semifinal matchup against Houston, Flagg boasts impressive stats, averaging 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. His standout moment came during a matchup against Notre Dame in January, where he shattered the ACC freshman record with a phenomenal 42-point game, adding 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead Duke to victory. This spectacular outing contributed to one of the most impressive months ever recorded, where Flagg averaged 25.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in January while exhibiting remarkable shooting percentages of 57.9% from the field and 42.9% from beyond the arc.
Despite facing adversity with an ankle injury that sidelined him during the ACC tournament's semifinal and championship rounds, Flagg bounced back impressively during the NCAA tournament. He showcased his talent once more with a stellar performance against Arizona in the Sweet 16, scoring 30 points while also contributing 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
With Flagg's victory, he joins an elite list of freshmen who have won the Wooden Award, which includes such luminaries as Duke's Zion Williamson in 2019, Kentucky's Anthony Davis in 2012, and Texas's Kevin Durant in 2007. The Wooden Award has been a staple of college basketball excellence, awarded annually since 1977, starting with UCLA’s Marques Johnson. The previous two seasons saw Purdue's Zach Edey take home the award, marking him as only the second player to win this prestigious honor twice, following Ralph Sampson.
As Flagg continues to break records and set new standards in college basketball, eyes are eagerly set on his future, especially with the NBA draft just around the corner. Will he live up to the hype and become a transformative player in the professional league? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Cooper Flagg’s journey has only just begun!
