Introduction

In a shocking twist for New Jersey commuters, January 5 will see a confluence of toll hikes that could leave drivers feeling the financial pinch like never before.

Toll Increases

Not only will the Port Authority impose increased tolls for crossing into Manhattan, but the MTA will simultaneously launch its much-anticipated congestion pricing fees.

Starting at midnight on January 5, New Jersey drivers utilizing E-ZPass will face a new reality at the Port Authority's bridges and tunnels: the peak hour toll will jump from $15.38 to $16.06, while off-peak charges will rise from $13.38 to $14.06—a painful increase of 68 cents for every crossing.

MTA Congestion Pricing

What’s worse? On the same day, the MTA's congestion pricing will kick off, imposing a $9 daytime charge on passenger vehicles entering Manhattan.

This means any driver crossing through the Holland or Lincoln tunnels will still pay the full Port Authority toll, but will receive a $3 credit against the new MTA charges. In total, that means a staggering maximum of $22.06 to drive into New York on that day.

Political Background

This double whammy is the result of a recent political backdrop in New York. Last June, Governor Kathy Hochul paused plans for the congestion pricing, originally scheduled to start at a $15 base price.

However, following the November elections, the pace picked back up, eventually leading to the MTA board approving the launch of congestion pricing at a $9 base toll.

Uncoordinated Efforts?

Interestingly, the Port Authority board coincidentally decided to raise its toll rates on the same date, something that MTA spokesperson Aaron Donovan stated was not a coordinated effort, just a matter of bad timing for commuters.

PATH Train Increase

But it doesn’t stop there—starting January 12, the cost of a single ride on the PATH train will also increase from $2.75 to $3, adding to the growing list of fees that commuters will have to navigate in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

With urban congestion continuing to escalate, many are questioning whether these toll hikes will truly serve their intended purpose or simply burden those who rely on these critical transport routes. As drivers prepare for this financial blow, one thing is certain: navigating into New York City will never be the same!
