Using a homemade device known as an "orbital sidereal tracker," Pettit managed to stabilize his camera’s aim at specific celestial locations, allowing for crisp images of the Milky Way against a backdrop of a cloudy Pacific Ocean just before dawn. The resulting blue-purple hues offered a stunning visual spectacle, showcasing Earth's atmosphere's interaction with sunlight.
