ARLINGTON, VA — Dmitry Orlov, a former standout with the Washington Capitals, is gearing up for an intense battle as he prepares to take on his old teammates in the second round of the playoffs, starting Tuesday night. Now donning the jersey of the Carolina Hurricanes, Orlov is looking to be the one who ends the Capitals' season.
Having spent over a decade with the Capitals, Orlov's transition to the Hurricanes marks a significant shift in his career. Although he has faced his former team nine times since relocating, this postseason encounter will be the first time he confronts them with stakes so high.
The rivalry is alive and well, but veteran Capitals defenseman John Carlson insists that every game is just another step on their journey. "It doesn’t matter if it was my brother out there; we focus on ourselves and our game plan," he stated.
Drafted by Washington in 2009, Orlov blossomed into a crucial part of the Capitals’ defensive lineup, culminating in a historic Stanley Cup victory in 2018. With eight points in that glorious playoff run, he celebrated alongside his teammates and helped lift the franchise's first Cup. Now, ironically, he finds himself aiming to block their path to success.
Reflecting on his unusual position, Orlov remarked, "You never know how life could end up. I want to win. This series is going to mean a lot to me personally." His return to the arena brings mixed emotions, but his aggressive mindset is crystal clear.
Orlov’s departure from Washington occurred when the Capitals traded him to the Boston Bruins in a strategic deal. While he flirted with the idea of re-signing with the Capitals, he ultimately secured a two-year contract with Carolina.
Despite the roster changes in Washington since he left, Orlov has maintained close ties with his former teammates. Recent reunions with Evgeny Kuznetsov and quality time with Alex Ovechkin during a vacation showcase the bonds that remain strong off the ice. However, once the game begins, friendship will be put on hold.
Ovechkin, reflecting on the upcoming matchup, noted the importance of focusing on the game, saying, "No. Regular. Nothing special." He acknowledges the excitement of the competition, but maintains his dedication to the task at hand.
The road ahead won't be a walk in the park for the Capitals, as Orlov has been a standout performer with the Hurricanes this season, ranking third among his team’s defensemen with 28 points in 76 games. His strong physical play will undoubtedly test the Capitals as the series unfolds.
Fellow teammate Tom Wilson is well aware of Orlov's tenacity, stating, "I know exactly what he’s going to give to me. It will be all-out compete and battle. He won’t shy away from any confrontation, and I’m sure a lot of our guys will be up against him."
As anticipation builds, the Capitals will host the Hurricanes at Capital One Arena for Game 1 on Wednesday at 7 PM. Who will emerge victorious in this clash of past and present? Stay tuned!
