Lions Stumble in Season Debut
GREEN BAY, WI – Dan Campbell had cautioned fans that the Detroit Lions might experience a rough start to their 2025 NFL season, and unfortunately, his warnings rang true on Sunday. The Lions suffered a disappointing 27-13 defeat against the Green Bay Packers in their season opener, raising multiple concerns about their performance.
Despite the temptation to jump to conclusions after just one game, this blowout loss was a manifestation of many of the fears looming over the team. The offensive line, which was previously touted as the best in the league, looked unrecognizable, while the defense struggled to apply any serious pressure on the quarterback. Meanwhile, the offense went through a painful struggle under the new play-caller, John Morton.
Morton’s Underwhelming Debut as Play-Caller
In a moment of desperation, rookie Isaac TeSlaa caught a leaping touchdown pass with just 55 seconds on the clock, preventing the Lions from being shut out for the first time since last season. Yet, the overall offensive performance left much to be desired. Morton’s debut did not showcase the vibrant, creative gameplay fans had come to enjoy under former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
Although quarterback Jared Goff started strong, completing 13 of his first 14 passes, he struggled to gain significant yardage, finishing the game with just 225 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Lions, hailed for their explosive scoring capabilities last season, made it clear they have a long way to go to return to that caliber.
