In an exciting display of talent and strategy, trainer David Eustace achieved his first career treble in Hong Kong at Sha Tin on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Eustace, who has made a remarkable entrance into Hong Kong's racing scene with 23 wins this season alone, saw his horses Regency Happy Star, Good Luck Babe, and Sea Sapphire triumph in their respective races.
“I knew we were bringing a strong team today, and they proved that with two winners and a second place finish,” Eustace remarked, clearly delighted. “This is a fantastic surprise. I’m really pleased with how consistently they have all raced.”
The day kicked off with Regency Happy Star securing victory in the Class 5 Chung Chi Alumni Handicap (1400m), ridden by Alexis Badel. Eustace praised the horse's development, stating, “He’s had a terrific season, gaining confidence and relaxing well during his races. The distance and track suited him perfectly.”
With three wins out of his last five starts, Regency Happy Star is proving to be a formidable competitor, and Eustace is eager for at least one more run in Class 5. “It's going to get tougher from here, but I believe he can handle it,” he commented.
Good Luck Babe also performed admirably, outpacing rivals in the Class 4 United Alumni Handicap (1600m), while Sea Sapphire showcased grit and determination to take the Class 4 CUHK Alumni Cup Handicap (1200m), finishing ahead of debut winner Akashvani.
Meanwhile, jockey Karis Teetan celebrated his own treble, beginning with Top Throne in the Class 4 New Asia Alumni Handicap (1200m) for trainer David Hayes. After initially stumbling in his first run, Teetan observed significant improvement, saying, 'He did many things wrong last time but came back strong today.'
Teetan's winning streak continued as he piloted young horse Mr. Cool to victory in the Class 4 Morningside Alumni Handicap (1400m). “It’s been a challenging few weeks, but I remained focused, and today’s draws worked in my favor,” Teetan said, acknowledging his faithful trainers and owners.
The racing scene also witnessed Voyage Samurai clinching another victory, solidifying his reputation as a dependable performer under the guidance of jockey Derek Leung. In total, he achieved his fifth win among 13 starts in the Class 2 Faculty of Education Alumni Handicap (1600m).
Jockey Hugh Bowman guided Sky Jewellery, a promising prospect for the future, to an impressive win in the Class 3 Wu Yee Sun And Lee Woo Sing Alumni Handicap (1600m). Bowman's assessment of the young horse was optimistic, noting that while he is still learning, he handled the competition well.
Other notable performances included David Hall's Geneva scoring a third win this season, demonstrating strong potential in the Class 3 Shaw Alumni Handicap (1200m), and Brenton Avdulla also achieving a double with Brilliant Express in the same class.
In an industry where every race counts, Eustace's rise reflects a broader trend in Hong Kong racing, showcasing new talent and thrills at the forefront of the sport.
