In a stunning counterattack, Ukrainian intelligence agents have reportedly eliminated members of a Russian secret service cell implicated in the assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych. Voronych, a key figure in Ukraine's security services, was gunned down in broad daylight in Kyiv last week, sparking a fierce response from Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency.
Details are emerging that reveal the SBU launched a targeted operation to apprehend suspected members of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). However, when the agents resisted during the raid, Ukrainian forces were forced to take them out.
Russian officials have remained silent on the incident, which adds to the growing list of embarrassing military setbacks for Moscow, particularly where Ukraine's intelligence operations are concerned. The operation echoes past instances where Ukrainian forces successfully neutralized high-ranking Russian military personnel.
Reportedly, two FSB agents—a man and a woman—are believed to have executed the assassination of Colonel Voronych, which was caught on surveillance cameras. While the SBU did not disclose the exact number of FSB members killed during the operation, they shared a video featuring two deceased individuals.
Sources indicate that Voronych was actively engaged in covert missions within Russian-occupied territories and played a pivotal role in orchestrating Ukraine's bold incursion into Russia's Kursk region last year.
The SBU disclosed that the alleged assassins were instructed by their handler to stalk Voronych and monitor his movements before they were given the location of his hideout. Upon discovering a pistol equipped with a suppressor, they attempted to go into hiding following their deadly mission but were swiftly tracked down.
The SBU has significantly expanded its operations since Russia's invasion, now encompassing not just intelligence and security but also aggressive counter-strikes against Moscow's operatives, including strategic sabotage and assassination.
In a separate front, as tensions escalate, Russia launched 60 drones overnight into Ukraine. The Ukrainian air force reported successfully intercepting 20 of these drones amidst ongoing assaults, which resulted in civilian casualties in the Donetsk and Kherson regions.
The conflict continues to intensify, with both sides grappling for control and retaliating in increasingly drastic ways.
