2024-09-26

DAC Beachcroft Opens Hong Kong Office

In a significant move, London-based law firm DAC Beachcroft (DACB) has officially opened its office in Hong Kong, marking the firm’s second foray into Asia after establishing a presence in Singapore back in 2011. This expansion demonstrates DACB's commitment to catering to the growing legal needs of multinational companies operating in the region.

Leadership in Hong Kong

The new office is spearheaded by partners Ross Risby and Wai Yue Loh, who bring a wealth of experience to their roles. The Hong Kong office will primarily focus on areas such as insurance, shipping, trading, and commodities, serving a diverse clientele that includes major international insurers like Zurich Insurance Group and Allianz.

Expertise of Ross Risby and Wai Yue Loh

Ross Risby, a seasoned insurance expert who has relocated from London, noted, “Although we currently have a limited portfolio of local insurer clients, there’s significant potential for growth in that area.” His expertise lies in financial institutions along with professional liability and directors and officers insurance disputes. He will collaborate with Wai Yue Loh, who also serves as a joint managing director at Incisive Law, DACB’s affiliated firm in Singapore. Loh specializes in shipping, trading, commodities, and insurance law and has substantial experience advising Chinese clients both domestically and abroad.

Previous Partnerships

Prior to opening the Hong Kong office, DACB had been proactive in partnering with established local law firms to enhance its service delivery for multinational clients across Asia. Notably, in 2018, DACB joined forces with Hong Kong-based Oldham, Li & Nie (OLN) to leverage DACB’s global insurance capabilities alongside OLN’s local legal expertise.

Client Demand Drives Expansion

Risby expressed that the decision to open a physical office in Hong Kong was driven by client demand for on-the-ground legal advice. “While we have had fruitful relationships with firms in Hong Kong, the increasing demand for local advice has become apparent,” he stated.

Trade Growth Between China and Latin America

As noted in a press release on September 24, Loh emphasized the ongoing trade growth between China and Latin America, highlighting that a significant amount of this activity flows through Hong Kong, necessitating the need for a dedicated office in the city.

New Association with CK Lee & Co

To further solidify its presence, DACB has formed an association with CK Lee & Co, a newly established law firm in Hong Kong. This collaboration will ensure that clients receive comprehensive legal support, both in terms of international law and local Hong Kong law. CK Lee & Co is led by Kelvin Lee, a former partner at Ince & Co with expertise in coverage disputes and product liability insurance, alongside senior associate Will Chan.

Optimism for the Future

Risby conveyed optimism regarding the partnership: “We expect our association with CK Lee & Co to commence imminently, enhancing our ability to meet client needs efficiently and effectively.”

Conclusion

This strategic expansion positions DAC Beachcroft to better serve the evolving legal landscape in Asia and reinforces its commitment to providing superior service to clients engaged in complex global trade and insurance matters.
