Cyberpunk 2077 Update: What’s New?

Last week, Cyberpunk 2077 was updated to version 2.3, introducing exciting features, including improved upscaling support for PC players and the long-awaited Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) option for consoles. But what does this mean for gamers on the PlayStation 5 Pro?

Unlocking Potential on PS5 Pro

While the update doesn’t provide tailored enhancements specifically for the PS5 Pro, the unlocked frame rates offered by VRR are promising. 30fps in Ray Tracing (RT) mode can soar to 40fps, while the performance mode can break the traditional 60fps barrier and potentially hit up to 120fps. It’s a tantalizing hint at what a true PS5 Pro upgrade could deliver.

Testing VRR: The Results Are In

To dive deeper, I conducted tests using internal benchmarks from the PC version, accessible through the game's cross-save feature. On the PS5, VRR allows for higher frame rates in both RT and performance modes. However, testing revealed that the Series X didn’t show significant improvements with VRR, despite reporting a VRR signal.

A Closer Look at Frame Rate Performance

Comparing frame rates between the base PS5 and the Pro reveals a stark difference: the base model averages around 62.84fps, while the Pro manages an impressive 81.03fps, highlighting its potential. Even during graphically intense sequences, the Pro generally maintains superior smoothness.

What About Lower Spec Consoles?

For PS4 players, VRR might not seem essential, but it can still help with performance during less demanding areas of the game, improving responsiveness by eliminating v-sync. Yet, one downside is the potential drop in resolution. Both the PS5 and Pro max out at 1440p, with dynamic resolution scaling coming into play.

Why Ray Tracing Might Fall Short

While VRR does unlock frame rates in RT mode, it struggles to impress. The Pro may consistently reach around 40fps, but the subtle improvements with ray-traced shadows hardly justify the performance costs. Overall, it’s questionable whether VRR actually enhances this mode.

Final Thoughts: A Glimpse of the Future?

Despite no clear commitment from CD Projekt RED for a PS5 Pro upgrade, the introduction of VRR is a step in the right direction. Imagine if the developers introduced dedicated ray-traced reflections and lighting—transformative features that could redefine the gameplay experience. For now, VRR is the gateway to a smoother Cyberpunk 2077 experience on the PS5 Pro, but it leaves us eagerly hoping for more.
