COVID-19 is making a comeback in several states, with alarming surges reported in Texas, California, Oregon, Nevada, and New Mexico. Residents in these areas are urged to stay vigilant as infection rates climb.
Recent changes have affected the reliability of COVID tracking data, mainly due to funding cuts and reduced testing initiated during the Trump administration. This leaves many areas without the effective monitoring tools they once had.
Rising Cases in Texas and Beyond!
Dr. S. Wesley Long from Houston Methodist Hospital highlights a concerning trend: "In Houston and across Texas, we're observing an uptick in COVID-19 cases. The South Central U.S., particularly Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, is witnessing some of the highest positivity rates nationwide."
The West Coast is Not Immune!
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Scott Roberts from Yale Medicine adds that the Texas region has recorded the highest positivity rates, closely followed by areas on the West Coast including Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada. This trend may even stretch through Colorado and the Dakotas.
What’s Causing the Surge?
The summer spike in cases is linked to two new COVID variants, Stratus and Nimbus. However, while these variants are contributing to the rise in cases, they are not deemed more severe than their predecessors.
Health Risks Persist!
Despite the variants not being more dangerous, the realities of COVID-19 remain harsh. Complications like long COVID, hospitalization, and even death are still possible, making it essential for everyone to take precautions. Additionally, emergency room visits for COVID-related issues are increasing in many regions.
As COVID-19 cases surge and new variants spread, it’s crucial for individuals to stay informed and take necessary steps to safeguard their health and the health of their loved ones.
