The groundbreaking study, published in the journal *Nature Medicine*, scrutinized global data on the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, combining both observational and randomized studies alongside the prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The shocking conclusion? Sugary drinks are estimated to be responsible for over 330,000 deaths annually due to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases alone.

Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are facing a particularly dire situation, yielding the highest instances of cardiovascular disease linked to these drinks. Meanwhile, sub-Saharan Africa reports alarming rates of type 2 diabetes attributed to sugary beverages, as outlined in the data model used by researchers.

Demographics indicate that the groups most vulnerable to the dangers posed by sweetened beverages are younger males with higher education living in urban settings, according to Toby Smithson, a registered dietitian and senior manager at the American Diabetes Association. "It's critical to recognize and implement priority actions to combat this unnecessary suffering," Mozaffarian adds.

Why Liquid Sugar Is a Quick Ticket to Poor Health

While the study did not conduct experimental interventions, the evidence linking sugary beverages with health risks is undeniable. Researchers gathered extensive data across 184 countries, yet the study's limitations included a lack of representation from all income levels and high-risk ethnic groups, as highlighted by Smithson.

The detrimental impact of sugary drinks is no surprise. These beverages provide "empty calories," which are devoid of nutritional value. They are packed with rapid-acting carbohydrates, leading to swift spikes in blood sugar. Research by nutritional epidemiologist Suzanne Janzi indicates that liquid sugars can be even more harmful than solid sugars found in typical sweet foods. "Liquid sugars are absorbed more rapidly since they don’t require the same breakdown processes as solid foods," she explains.

In contrast, solid foods rich in nutrients like fiber, proteins, and fats promote gradual sugar release into the bloodstream, preventing quick increases in blood sugar and excessive calorie intake. The lack of fullness created by liquid sugars can lead to overeating and appetite dysregulation.

Are Alternative Sweeteners the Solution?

While it might be tempting to turn to sugar substitutes, Mozaffarian warns that neither natural nor artificial low-calorie sweeteners are a perfect solution. He points to growing evidence that these alternatives can pose their own health risks over time. "They may serve as a short-term, less harmful fix, but not a long-term strategy," he cautions.

For those living with diabetes, however, Smithson suggests that artificial sweeteners can act as transitional tools for replacing sugary drinks. Nevertheless, experts advocate for a complete switch to unsweetened beverages, including sparkling water, unsweetened teas, or simply water itself.
