Connecticut Sun's Alyssa Thomas Takes a Stand Against Racism Following Playoff Victory

In a powerful display of solidarity and strength, Connecticut Sun veteran Alyssa Thomas firmly condemned the racist comments directed at players after her team's significant playoff series win against the Indiana Fever.

During a post-game press conference in Uncasville, Connecticut, Thomas addressed the concerning treatment that emerged following an intense Game 1 on September 22. She remarked, “In my 11-year career, I’ve never experienced such racial comments from the Indiana Fever fan base.” The incident followed a collision between her teammate DiJonai Carrington and rising star Caitlin Clark, which left Clark with an eye injury.

Both players clarified that there was no malicious intent behind the play; however, the backlash on social media was swift and aggressive. Carrington’s girlfriend, Indiana Fever player NaLyssa Smith, took to social media to share the distressing reality Carrington has faced, saying, “My girlfriend has been getting death threats, followed, called all types of names.”

Postgame, Thomas emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “We come to play basketball for our job and it’s fun, but we don’t want to come to work and see social media filled with hate.” She urged the need for officials to take necessary actions to protect players from such negativity.

Sun head coach Stephanie White fully supported Thomas's stance, reinforcing that issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia are prevalent in sports and must not be tolerated. “Sport is no exception, and it’s unacceptable, to be quite honest,” she declared.

Similarly, Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides highlighted the emotional and mental toll on athletes. “It’s a lot of hurtful, hateful speech out there, and it’s unacceptable,” Sides said, emphasizing the personal nature of the abuse players receive. She lamented, “These guys have to listen and watch that – social media is their life.”

In response to the escalating situation, the WNBA released a statement reinforcing its commitment against hate speech. The league declared, “The WNBA will not tolerate racist, derogatory, or threatening comments made about players, teams, and anyone affiliated with the league.” The statement also indicated that league security is actively monitoring threat-related activity and will collaborate with law enforcement when necessary.
