In a significant move aimed at bolstering its corporate capabilities in Asia, CMS has welcomed Steven Tran as a partner in its Hong Kong office. Tran is a seasoned expert in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and private equity, and his addition is expected to enhance CMS's role in facilitating critical transactions across the region.

Caryn Miller, CMS partner and managing director for Asia and the Middle East, highlighted Tran's importance within the firm, stating, “Steven will play a key role in overseeing M&A and private equity transactions throughout Asia, while also collaborating with our corporate team in Singapore led by Toby Grainger.” This strategic recruitment underscores CMS's commitment to becoming a leading player in the Asia-Pacific market.

With an impressive career spanning 25 years, Tran brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in advising multinational corporations and private equity funds on complex cross-border transactions. His extensive experience covers key jurisdictions including Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney. Before joining CMS, Tran held partner positions at prestigious firms such as Morrison Foerster, Mayer Brown, Hogan Lovells, and Kirkland & Ellis. He is qualified as a solicitor in Hong Kong, England and Wales, and Australia.

Tran's track record includes advising on notable transactions such as Grab's acquisition of Chope, a prominent restaurant reservation application in Southeast Asia. His insight into the fintech landscape also saw him provide strategic counsel to a global private equity fund contemplating the acquisition of a fintech company based in Singapore.

Miller reaffirmed CMS's strategic focus on Hong Kong, stating, “Hong Kong remains a vital hub for our operations in the APAC region, and Steve's arrival reinforces our commitment to expanding our capabilities here.” This is particularly relevant as the legal and financial landscapes continue to evolve rapidly in Asia.

Tran’s onboarding follows recent expansions within CMS's Hong Kong office, including the hiring of partners Paul Moloney and Helen Wang, who joined the firm’s funds and indirect real estate team. In addition, Mariel Dimsey, who returned last year after serving as secretary-general at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, has been instrumental in further establishing the firm's footprint in the region.

As CMS continues to strengthen its corporate and M&A capacities, the addition of Steven Tran is poised to make a significant impact, not only for clients but also in reinforcing the firm’s growing influence within the Asia-Pacific legal landscape. Stay tuned, as further developments in CMS's expansion strategy promise to reshape the firm’s positioning in this dynamic market!
