Inmates Experience a Touch of Holiday Spirit in Hong Kong Prisons

In a touching gesture of goodwill, the Correctional Services Department in Hong Kong has organized a series of Christmas festivities for persons in custody (PICs) during this festive season. This initiative aims to provide spiritual support and a sense of community to inmates, especially at a time when many may feel isolated and in need of hope.

On Christmas Day, Cardinal Stephen Chow, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, led a Christmas Mass at Stanley Prison. He was joined by notable figures including the Deputy Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr. Leung Ka-lun; Chaplain Deacon Wat Ho-keung; and Chief Superintendent Mr. Leung Chung-yin. Together, they conveyed Christmas blessings and shared inspirational messages with the participating inmates. Cardinal Chow also visited patients at the prison hospital, offering them compassion and support during this special time.

In addition, the Most Reverend Andrew Chan, the Archbishop of Hong Kong, conducted a Christmas service at the Pak Sha Wan Correctional Institution on December 19. His heartfelt addresses aimed to uplift the inmates’ spirits and extend his warm wishes during the holiday season.

The Correctional Services Chaplain, along with voluntary chaplains and representatives from various religious organizations, offers a wide range of spiritual and recreational services to inmates wishing to partake, regardless of their faith. Activities include visitations, teachings, counseling, and worship services designed to foster a sense of belonging and emotional well-being.

A Beacon of Hope During the Holidays

These initiatives underline the broader commitment of Hong Kong’s corrections system to rehabilitate and uplift individuals in custody, ensuring they feel valued and connected to the community, even while incarcerated. The special services are not just about religion; they also focus on providing psychological support and opportunities for personal growth through recreational and educational activities.

With Christmas often being a time for joy, family, and togetherness, such efforts highlight the importance of human connection, empathy, and redemption. Indeed, the festive activities are more than ritual; they represent a critical opportunity for inmates to find hope and strength within themselves.

As the holiday season continues, these heartfelt gestures serve as a poignant reminder that everyone deserves a chance at renewal and that the spirit of Christmas transcends the bars of any prison.
