In a heartfelt farewell to the Washington Nationals, recently ousted general manager Mike Rizzo is rolling out the red carpet for fans—by buying them beers! This exciting gesture will take place on Monday night, just before the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby kicks off.
Rizzo has invited fans to join him for a "Round on Riz" at either the Penn Quarter Sports Tavern or Walter's Sports Bar in Washington, D.C. It’s a unique opportunity to toast to the memories he made with the team and connect one last time with loyal supporters.
Last Sunday, Rizzo was fired along with manager Dave Martinez, as the Nationals faced a disappointing season with a record of 37-53 following a tough home sweep by the Boston Red Sox. The timing couldn’t be more poignant; the franchise is gearing up for the No. 1 pick in the 2025 MLB draft.
In an emotional Instagram message, Rizzo reflected on his journey, stating that D.C. has "become our home in every sense of the word" since he joined the organization in 2006 as an assistant general manager.
Rizzo officially took the reins as general manager in 2009, earning the title of president of baseball operations in 2013. Under his leadership, the Nationals clinched the NL East title twice in 2016 and 2017, yet that success was short-lived, with both seasons ending in the NLDS.
Despite mounting pressure after receiving a two-year extension prior to the 2018 season, Rizzo eventually led the Nationals to their first World Series victory in 2019 with a star-studded lineup featuring Juan Soto, Ryan Zimmerman, and Max Scherzer.
However, a string of disappointing seasons has plagued the Nationals, finishing last in the division four out of the past five years, and it looks like another struggle is on the horizon.
While Rizzo's tenure has seen its ups and downs, he deserves credit for kick-starting the Nationals' current rebuild. He was instrumental in acquiring top talent like left-hander MacKenzie Gore and outfielder James Wood in the blockbuster trade sending Soto to the Padres in 2022.
In a recent interview with D.C. radio station 106.7 The Fan, Rizzo expressed his confidence in the "solid" foundation of the ongoing rebuild. All eyes will now be on the Nationals as they prepare to make the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft—their first since drafting stars Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper back-to-back in 2009 and 2010.
Predictions are already swirling around the draft, with many expecting the Nationals to select promising left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson from LSU. As All-Star Week unfolds in Atlanta, all of D.C. will be watching closely.
