CLEVELAND, Ohio — In a strategic move during the 2025 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers secured the promising international swingman Saliou Niang with the 58th pick, potentially setting the stage for an exciting future.

Niang, a 6-foot-8 forward hailing from Senegal, has made waves in European basketball. Currently playing for Virtus Bologna in the Euroleague, the Cavs plan to keep him there next season, hoping he can showcase his talent further at the Las Vegas Summer League.

This young talent became a standout during pre-draft workouts, dazzling team executives with his unique combination of size, agility, and defensive prowess. His performance in Italy has been equally impressive; he averaged 8.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists for Aquila Trento, playing a pivotal role in their victory at the 2025 Italian National Cup. His efforts earned him the prestigious title of Most Improved Player in the Lega Basket Serie A.

Despite his potential, Niang’s offensive game needs refinement, as evidenced by his struggle from beyond the arc—making only 11 three-pointers over 45 games. However, the Cavaliers opted for a long-term investment in his development instead of rushing for immediate impact players.

Cleveland entered the Draft with two second-round picks, unable to compete in the first round due to their trade for superstar Donovan Mitchell.
