Canon’s New Live Streaming App: Can It Stand Up to the Competition?
Canon has introduced an intriguing new live streaming app called Live Switcher Mobile, which allows users to wirelessly connect and switch video feeds from up to three mobile devices. Currently, it's only compatible with iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPadOS 16 or newer, leaving Android users in the lurch. Perhaps even more surprising is the app's lack of compatibility with Canon's own digital cameras, although the company has hinted that this functionality will be integrated 'in the future.'
For those eager to try out the app, it is now available for download and can be used for free, though with notable limitations. The app caps video quality at 720p and includes an output watermark, along with occasional ads that do not appear to viewers. Users can opt for a premium subscription at $17.99 per month (over $215 per year), which raises the quality to 1080p and removes ads and watermarks. However, 4K streaming remains out of reach for now.
The app functions by designating one device as the host, which provides a switching interface and functions as the primary camera. Two additional devices can be connected to capture different angles or showcase gameplays. Switching between feeds can be done manually, but users also have the option to automate this process, switching between sources at intervals of eight to 20 seconds. The app even supports picture-in-picture streaming, allowing users to combine multiple video feeds, while text and image overlays can be added to enhance branding and interactivity.
Live Switcher Mobile supports live streaming to prominent platforms like YouTube and Facebook, as well as other services that support the RTMP protocol. However, it should be noted that the comment display feature is currently restricted to YouTube and Facebook only.
Despite its limitations compared to the more feature-rich OBS Studio—a free alternative that allows multiple video sources from mobile devices—Canon’s app may appeal to budding influencers and streamers looking for a user-friendly option. The prospect of future compatibility with Canon's digital cameras, coupled with potential enhancements like 4K streaming, makes this app worth keeping an eye on.
As the world of live streaming continues to expand, Canon is positioning itself as a potential player in a rapidly evolving market. Will Live Switcher Mobile become the choice of a new generation of streamers? Only time will tell, but early adopters will undoubtedly have plenty to say about their experiences!
