WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – At his inaugural NFL annual meeting as head coach, Aaron Glenn laid out his compelling vision for revitalizing the struggling New York Jets, who have been caught in a cycle of rebuilding for too long.

The Jets last tasted success 14 seasons ago, with only one winning season to boast of since then. Their last playoff appearance was during the 2010-11 campaign, and as the 2025-26 season approaches, Glenn marks the fourth head coach in eight seasons, raising questions about stability within the organization.

The Arrival of Justin Fields

Despite the Jets’ troubling past, Glenn, who previously served as the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator, is focused on the future. He returned to the franchise that drafted him, brimming with confidence that he can lead them back to respectability.

Central to his plans is the newly signed quarterback, Justin Fields, whom Glenn believes can be the catalyst for change. After an unsuccessful two-year stint with Aaron Rodgers, the Jets are betting on Fields following his arrival in free agency. Already slated as the starting quarterback, Fields will have the opportunity to unlock his full potential—something that was often elusive in his previous team environments.

Optimism for a New Era

Glenn is genuinely optimistic about Fields’ capabilities. “When you look at game film from his days at Ohio State, it's clear he has a big arm and knows how to run an offense when given the chance,” Glenn noted during his press conference. “He's a great person and a really intelligent player, and we’re committed to allowing him to excel as a quarterback.”

While Fields is recognized as one of the league's premier mobile quarterbacks, Glenn also anticipates great success for him in traditional drop-back situations. To optimize Fields' skills, Glenn brought in Tanner Engstrand, former Lions' passing game coordinator, to serve as the Jets' offensive playcaller. They are set to collaborate closely during the offseason to construct an offense tailored to Fields’ strengths.

A Bold Commitment

In a bold move, the Jets named Fields the starting quarterback right away, bypassing a competition with veteran Tyrod Taylor, who played intermittently last season. Glenn believes this commitment signals a definitive and exciting direction for the team. “There’s always going to be competition,” he stated. “[Fields] being QB1 doesn’t negate Tyrod’s involvement; they both understand that position battles are a fundamental part of this league.”

Looking Ahead

With the departure of Rodgers and the fresh arrival of Fields under Glenn's leadership, the Jets are once again shaking things up. However, Glenn is careful not to box himself into a specific system just yet. “Offense and defense are shaped around the personnel we have. I’m not going to set concrete expectations until we assess what we’re working with,” he explained.
