In a stunning showcase of talent, BYU's special teams flew high during their resounding 69-0 victory over Portland State at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The highlight? A remarkable 56-yard field goal by senior kicker Will Ferrin, which tied the school’s 25-year-old record previously set by Owen Pochman.
The game shifted momentum with a sensational blocked field goal returned for a touchdown by linebacker Jack Kelly, electrifying the record crowd at LES—the biggest since a 2009 match-up against TCU. Ferrin's incredible kick came in the third quarter, extending BYU's lead to a staggering 55-0.
Despite standout performances from QB Bear Bachmeier, who racked up five touchdowns, and running back LJ Martin’s career-high 131 rushing yards, Ferrin's kick didn't go unnoticed by head coach Kalani Sitake. "He’s a next-level kicker," Sitake praised, reflecting on a game where the Cougars compiled 606 yards while limiting Portland State to a mere 51.
Ferrin, who scored a total of 15 points with his two field goals and nine extra points, is now tied for the nation's leading scorer after Week 1. Having made 18 consecutive field goals, he's undeniably a force to be reckoned with. Sitake noted, "My old teammate, Owen Pochman, had the record. I think we’re trying to break the record, but it seemed like the right thing to do and he was ready to go."
Known for his clutch performance against rival Utah last season, where he kicked the game-winning 44-yarder, Ferrin is eyeing the Lou Groza award again this year. He's already surpassing his previous personal best of 54 yards from last year's victory over Baylor, with plenty of distance to spare.
"It’s funny that people make a big deal out of my kicks," Ferrin shared. "Every kick feels the same to me, whether it’s a PAT or a long game-winner. As long as I hit the ball clean and straight, I know good things will happen."
Now co-captain of the team, Ferrin is also focused on his streak of 80 consecutive PATs. He emphasized the importance of BYU’s dedication to special teams, highlighting how it creates depth within the team.
With depth and unity on display, Ferrin is excited to continue making plays for the Cougars as they prepare to face Stanford (0-1) next. BYU enters as a strong 18-point favorite, looking to capitalize on Stanford's troubled season, particularly following the firing of head coach Troy Taylor.
The Cougars previously triumphed over Stanford, defeating them 35-26 last year. This matchup will be particularly meaningful for Bear and Tiger Bachmeier, brothers now on the same team, as they return to face their former program.
With Ferrin's record in sight and the team’s explosive performances, BYU fans have every reason to believe this season could be unforgettable.
