In a significant shake-up for the University of Maryland's basketball program, Buzz Williams has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Maryland Men's Basketball team. This announcement was made by Colleen Sorem, the Interim Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, at 12 PM in the XFINITY Center, where Williams will be formally introduced to the public.
Buzz Williams arrives in College Park with an impressive résumé, boasting 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and 13 seasons with 20 or more wins in his 18-year coaching career. "It is an honor and privilege to be named the head coach of the University of Maryland men's basketball team," Williams stated. He expressed gratitude to President Darryll J. Pines and Sorem for this exceptional opportunity, committing to uphold the legacy of one of college basketball's most illustrious programs.
Sorem shared her excitement over Williams' hiring, highlighting his outstanding record across multiple programs. Mississippi State and Virginia Tech are among schools where he successfully led teams, and his work ethic and integrity stand out as pivotal attributes. "Buzz embraces the high expectations here at Maryland, and we are all excited to get started on this new era in Maryland basketball," Sorem added.
President Darryll J. Pines emphasized the importance of finding the right head coach for the program’s continued success, both on and off the court. "With an exemplary record of competitive success and a demonstrated commitment to leadership and development," Pines remarked, "Buzz Williams is the ideal coach to lead us forward."
Williams most recently coached Texas A&M for six seasons, leading the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons, earning SEC Coach of the Year honors twice. His overall coaching record stands at 373 wins against 228 losses, making him the active leader in total victories among coaches with 18 years in the profession.
In addition to the accolades, Williams has an ambitious goal in sight. He aims to become only the third Division I coach in history to achieve at least 100 wins at four different institutions. His peers in this outstanding category include legends Lefty Driesell and Steve Alford.
What’s next for Williams? Maryland, known for its passionate fan base and storied history, will be under the spotlight as it embarks on its next chapter. Last season, the Terrapins struggled to make a significant impact; however, with Williams at the helm, there is a renewed sense of optimism. Fans are already buzzing with speculation on potential recruitment strategies and high-profile signings.
Buzz's deep-rooted connections in college basketball could also play a pivotal role in recruiting top talent. His emphasis on building character and teamwork has been a hallmark of his coaching style, earning respect and admiration across the collegiate landscape. With a commitment to both player development and success, Williams looks poised to revitalize the Terps into a conference powerhouse.
As College Park prepares for a transformative season ahead, one thing is clear: the excitement around Buzz Williams’ appointment is palpable, and expectations will be soaring as they strive for greatness in the upcoming NCAA season. Will Williams become the change-maker that Maryland needs? Only time will tell!
