In a stunning display of resilience, Brooks Koepka has returned to the major championship scene with newfound determination. Once dismissive of the challenges posed by major tournaments, the five-time champion's recent struggles had fans wondering if he could reclaim his former glory.
At the 125th U.S. Open held at Oakmont Country Club, Koepka shot an impressive 2-under 68, putting him just two shots off the leader, J.J. Spaun. His stellar play on Thursday has established him as one of the few major champions under par, alongside Jon Rahm.
Despite a lackluster performance in recent tournaments, where he had missed cuts at Augusta National and Quail Hollow and slipped to No. 98 in Data Golf’s rankings, Koepka's spirits seem to have lifted. Reflecting on his challenging journey, he admitted, "I wasn’t happy. It’s been very irritating. I had to apologize to everyone around me." The pressure had clearly taken its toll.
Koepka faced issues both mentally and technically, admitting he fell into bad habits. Just days prior to the U.S. Open, he chose not to practice on the course but instead spent time on the range working through his swing issues, acknowledging that he was mismanaging his club position.
His turnaround may have been sparked by a tough love session with his coach, Pete Cowen, who took him to task during a practice session. Cowen's blunt feedback echoed in Koepka's mind, similar to their prior conversations before major tournaments. He remarked, "I wasn’t happy with it, but it was something I think you need to hear… I don’t like having yes-people around me. I just want someone to tell me the truth."
With a re-energized mindset and technical adjustments beginning to click, Koepka is positioned not just as a participant but as a serious contender in this year's U.S. Open. "I’d like to keep it that way," he stated, confident in his ability to reclaim his title as one of the sport’s elite.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Brooks Koepka to see if he can maintain this momentum and prove that despite recent setbacks, the champion within him is still alive and eager for victory.
