CINCINNATI -- The Milwaukee Brewers are on fire, and in a dazzling display of resilience, they’ve tied their franchise record with 13 straight wins. Inspired by the late, great broadcaster Bob Uecker, the team staged a remarkable comeback against the Cincinnati Reds, overcoming a staggering seven-run deficit to triumph 10-8.
This victory echoes back to the unforgettable start of the 1987 season when the Brewers kicked things off with 13 consecutive wins. Christian Yelich, who was absolutely instrumental in this latest victory with four hits, including two home runs and five RBIs, expressed the gravity of the win.
"It's just a special win," Yelich declared, sharing his premonition with manager Pat Murphy that they could turn the game around even while facing an 8-1 hole after just two innings. Yelich made this remarkable achievement even more poignant by using a bat that honored Uecker, who passed away in January at the age of 90.
Yelich explains that this team has faced tough situations before and always found a way back. "We’ve got a roomful of fighters who don’t care about the scoreboard," he said. "We believe in each other, and I knew we would find a way back into it."
Uecker, affectionately known as Mr. Baseball, dedicated over fifty years to broadcasting Milwaukee games. Manager Pat Murphy emphasized the importance of Uecker's presence, stating, "It feels like he’s watching over us. He wouldn’t miss a game. He was definitely with us tonight; it was special."
Yelich almost put away the tribute bat after hitting a homer in the second inning, but felt compelled to keep swinging it throughout the game. Originally scheduled to honor Uecker with the bat last season, a back surgery delayed the tribute. When Uecker saw the bat, he loved it. Yelich described the night as a full-circle moment: "If you know Ueck, you know crazy things happen when he’s involved," he said.
With this latest hot streak, the Brewers have solidified their dominance in Major League Baseball, boasting a stunning 77-44 record, which places them six games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays and nine games clear of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
Remarkably, the Brewers have become the first team in nearly a century to achieve a double-digit win streak by coming back from a seven-run deficit, showcasing their fighting spirit and unwavering determination.
