In a striking shift in weather, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has announced that an intense winter monsoon will sweep through the southern coast of China, resulting in a significant drop in temperatures across Hong Kong. Starting from Thursday, January 9, residents can expect a chilling transformation as the mercury takes a nosedive.

The coldest days are predicted to be Friday and Saturday, with urban areas experiencing temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius. However, those in the New Territories, particularly in regions like Tai Po, Sheung Shui, and Ta Kwu Ling, should prepare for even colder conditions, with temperatures potentially plummeting to around seven degrees Celsius. It’s not uncommon for these neighborhoods to experience single-digit readings, where woolly hats and cozy scarves will become essential attire.

As the weekend progresses, the harsh winter monsoon will gradually be replaced by an easterly airstream, leading to a slight rise in temperatures early next week. Nevertheless, the HKO has issued a cold weather warning that will remain in effect until Sunday, January 12. This warning marks the first for the year 2025, though a previous cold weather alert was issued for the Hong Kong region during the winter season on December 20, 2024.

Residents are urged to stay informed about the drastic weather changes, and you can find more detailed forecasts and updates on the HKO's official website.

In other local news, travelers should note that HK Express was recently acknowledged as the world's fastest-growing airline, a testament to its rising prominence in the aviation industry. Additionally, for those looking for unique experiences, an abandoned mine at Robin's Nest has been transformed into an open museum, offering a glimpse into Hong Kong's rich history. Plus, don’t miss out on the opportunity to join a free, three-day-long tea festival at PMQ this January!
