Exciting Phase for Hong Kong's International Airport
Get ready for a major transformation at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)! Starting March 2026, a total of 15 airlines—including HK Express and Hong Kong Airlines—are set to shift their check-in counters from Terminal 1 to the newly expanded Terminal 2, which is gearing up to accommodate approximately 15 million passengers a year, or 20% of the airport's annual footfall.
A Game-Changing Investment
With a whopping HK$12.9 billion investment, the reconstruction of Terminal 2 is not just about aesthetics. It’s a strategic move in line with the airport’s ambitious Three Runway System (3RS) project, aimed at enhancing service quality and operational efficiency.
Distinct Experiences in New Terminals
Now here’s where it gets interesting—the two terminals will serve very different purposes! Terminal 1 will maintain a 'classic' layout focused on business and long-haul travelers, akin to the sophistication of Central's Landmark, while Terminal 2 will cater to younger, tech-savvy travelers, creating a vibrant and innovative environment.
Grand Opening of Terminal 2
Mark your calendars! Terminal 2 will softly launch its new facilities starting September 23, 2025, kicking off with an impressive indoor Coach Hall. This space will feature 41 parking spots for tour buses, cross-boundary coaches, limousines, and local resident coaches.
Smooth Transition for Travelers
As part of this exciting transition, the relocation of check-in counters and boarding points to the Coach Hall will help ease congestion at Terminal 1, especially during peak hours. This means a smoother experience for all travelers!
What's Next for Terminal 2?
Following the Coach Hall’s launch, travelers can expect the unveiling of essential departure facilities and check-in counters in early 2026, with more phases to come. The Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) is working closely with stakeholders to make this transition as seamless as possible, ensuring a top-notch experience for everyone.
With the impending opening of Terminal 2, HKIA is set to elevate its status as a global travel hub, catering to modern passenger needs while enhancing efficiency and comfort. Buckle up; the future of air travel in Hong Kong is looking bright!
