A new COVID variant known as NB.1.8.1, or Nimbus, is rapidly spreading across the United States, and it brings a particularly painful symptom that's catching attention.
Originally detected in China back in January, this variant was virtually nonexistent in the U.S. as of May, accounting for a shocking 0% of cases. However, by early June, it surged to a staggering 37% of all COVID cases, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In comparison, the predominant variant remains Omicron, or LP.8.1, making up 38% of infections.
The World Health Organization has placed NB.1.8.1 under its 'variant under monitoring' category. Thankfully, current vaccines are reportedly effective against this new strain, and there are no signs indicating that it leads to more severe illnesses or heightened rates of hospitalization.
A New Symptom: Razor Blade Throat
One alarming symptom associated with this variant has been dubbed "razor blade throat," with many individuals who tested positive complaining of an intensely sore throat. Researchers are still investigating whether this symptom is more prevalent in those who have received their vaccinations compared to those who haven’t.
Common COVID Symptoms—What You Should Know
While 'razor blade throat' is the standout symptom for the Nimbus variant, many of its other indicators mirror those of earlier COVID strains. As the variant continues to spread, it's crucial to stay informed about these symptoms, keep monitoring your health, and consult healthcare professionals if you experience any concerning signs.
