Berlin Film Festival 2025: Exciting Lineup with Legends and Controversies!
The 75th Berlin International Film Festival, renowned as the world's largest public film festival, has just announced its thrilling competition lineup, featuring a range of exciting films from acclaimed directors like Richard Linklater, Michel Franco, and Hong Sang-soo. This year's Berlinale promises to ignite conversations about art, politics, and the current global environment.
Richard Linklater's Bold Return
One of the highlights is Linklater's Blue Moon, a poignant period drama centered on the last days of Lorenz Hart, one half of the famed songwriting duo Rodgers & Hart. This film is set to have its world premiere at the Berlinale, marking Linklater's fourth appearance in competition. His previous film, Boyhood, won him the Silver Bear for Best Director in 2014, and there’s buzzing speculation about whether he will take home more accolades this year. Blue Moon features an impressive cast, including Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott, and will be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Classics.
A Focus on Intimacy and Political Sensitivity
Hong Sang-soo, a regular at Berlinale and a four-time Silver Bear awardee, returns with his latest work, What Does That Nature Say to You? Norwegian filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud is back as well with Dreams, completing his trilogy that began with the audience-favorite Sex last year.
Among the other competition films are Hot Milk, the directorial debut of Polish screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz, featuring Emma Mackey and Vicky Krieps; and French drama The Ice Tower, directed by Lucile Hadžihalilović and starring Marion Cotillard.
A Festival Steeped in Politics
The festival is intrinsically linked to Berlin's political reputation. Organizer Tuttle emphasized this at the press conference, highlighting that political discourse often permeates film discussions. Last year's Berlinale was notably overshadowed by political statements made by award winners regarding the conflict in Gaza, which led to a backlash and accusations of antisemitism from various political figures. Tuttle anticipates challenges this year, especially with the national election campaign underway, culminating on the festival's final day, February 23.
“The environment has become divisive,” Tuttle remarked, “but there’s also a unique joy in presenting these incredible films.”
Social Commentary in Focus
Many of this year’s offerings delve into pressing social issues, as evidenced by the lineup which includes Das Deutsche Volk, examining far-right violence in Hanau, Germany; Michtav Le'David (A Letter to David), an Israeli director's poignant note to a friend abducted during the October 7 conflict; and My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow, highlighting the struggles of independent journalists under Russia's current regime.
Star Power and Jury Excellence
The 2025 Berlinale promises star-studded moments as well, with U.S. director Todd Haynes (known for Carol and Far From Heaven) serving as this year's international jury president. Additionally, Tilda Swinton is set to receive the Honorary Golden Bear for her lifetime achievements in cinema.

As the festival draws closer, anticipation is building not just for the films but also for the discussions they will spur.
