In a rollercoaster debut under new head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears faced disappointment as they fell short in their first game. Quarterback Caleb Williams showcased flashes of brilliance but also demonstrated inconsistency that sparked concern.
Post-game, Johnson analyzed the film and found a mixed bag of results from Williams. "It was a bit of a seesaw performance," he remarked. "There were moments when he executed at an elite level, comparable to some of the best in the NFL. He made some jaw-dropping throws, even under pressure, that truly stood out. However, there were definitely plays we’d want to have back—at least three or four key mistakes that we pinpointed on tape. He’s very self-aware and critical of his performance, which is a positive sign moving forward."
The Bears kicked off the game with a flawless offensive display, showcasing Williams' poise as he seamlessly transitioned between passing and eventually ran one in for a touchdown. Yet, that momentum evaporated quickly, leading to an extended period of frustrations for the young quarterback, only alleviated by a late-game drive that ended too short.
Johnson pointed out, "We saw some good football on the tape, but we also witnessed too many inconsistencies. The effort was definitely there; the players fought hard throughout the game. However, we need to focus on sharpening our execution, especially in critical moments like the fourth quarter."
Now in his second season after being the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the pressure is on Williams to find his rhythm and deliver the consistency the Bears desperately need.
