Major Announcement: Wemo's Future in Jeopardy!
In a surprising turn of events, Belkin has revealed it will cease support for nearly all of its Wemo smart home devices effective January 31, 2026. Only those integrated with Apple HomeKit are set to survive, causing a stir among loyal users.
What's Going Away?
Starting next February, features dependent on cloud connectivity—such as remote access and voice assistant functionality—will become obsolete. Belkin will also halt technical support and updates for the Wemo app, leaving users in the lurch.
A Silver Lining for Select Devices
Not all hope is lost! Three specific Wemo products (WLS0503, WSC010, WSP100), powered by the Thread protocol, alongside the Wemo video doorbell (WDC010), will continue to operate normally via Apple HomeKit—as long as they are set up prior to the support cutoff date.
Partial Refunds on the Table?
Belkin is offering customers a potential lifeline: if your Wemo device is still under warranty when support ends, you may qualify for a partial refund. However, keep your expectations in check, as the processing of refunds won't commence until support terminates.
A Crumbling Smart Home Vision?
This announcement isn’t entirely unforeseen. Earlier in 2023, Belkin stepped back from the Matter smart home standard, indicating a strategic retreat from its smart home initiatives. The company hasn’t introduced new Wemo products since then, raising concerns about its long-term vision for the smart home market.
Correction Alert
A recent correction clarified that while the WDC010 doorbell was initially described as Thread-based, it is not. Nevertheless, it will still function post-support termination.
What’s Next for Smart Home Enthusiasts?
As Belkin winds down its support for Wemo devices, what should consumers do? Now’s the time to reconsider your smart home setup and explore alternative devices that promise longevity and robust support. Will you stick with Wemo or choose a different path?
