‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Rules Box Office; Conservative Doc ‘Am I Racist?’ Makes Waves!

2024-09-15

The spooky antics of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" captivated audiences again this past weekend, securing its spot at the top of the domestic box office with an impressive $51.6 million in ticket sales. This figure follows its massive opening weekend, and with a drop of just 54% from the previous week, the film has already grossed a staggering $188 million in North America alone. On the international stage, the Warner Bros. sequel added another $28.7 million, bringing its total worldwide earnings to an eye-popping $264.3 million.

Industry analysts are praising the film's remarkable hold, highlighting the strong word of mouth among viewers. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Comscore, remarked, "To drop just 54% is really impressive and indicative of a pretty solid word of mouth. Audiences are enjoying the film."

The competition for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," however, was limited. Fresh releases like the James McAvoy thriller "Speak No Evil," a satirical documentary featuring conservative podcaster Matt Walsh, and new action flicks like "The Killer's Game" starring Dave Bautista, couldn't steal the show.

“Speak No Evil,” which placed second, is a remake of a chilling Danish horror film and managed to pull in an estimated $11.5 million across 3,375 theaters. The film’s release on Friday the 13th, coupled with positive reviews, seems to have paid off.

In third place, "Deadpool & Wolverine" continues to break records in its eighth weekend, earning another $5.2 million. This Disney and Marvel blockbuster has amassed $621.5 million domestically and $1.3 billion globally, solidifying its legacy.

The fourth spot in box office rankings was claimed by “Am I Racist?”, a controversial mockumentary that explores themes of race and identity through the lens of conservative columnist Matt Walsh. With an estimated $4.7 million from just 1,517 screens, the film showcases Walsh going undercover as a "DEI trainee." Produced by The Daily Wire, this film cost about $3 million to create and is being distributed by SDG Releasing, known for its commitment to economically priced films. The film targets conservative audiences, making headlines and stirring debate.

Rounding out the top five was "Reagan," which brought in $3 million in its third weekend, marking a total of $23.3 million domestically.

Meanwhile, "The Killer’s Game," which stars Bautista as a hitman diagnosed with a terminal illness, debuted at sixth place with $2.6 million and received lackluster reviews. The faith-based film "God's Not Dead: In God We Trust" also managed a place in the top 10, making $1.5 million during its opening.

In limited release, "My Old Ass," a coming-of-age film featuring Maisy Stella, kicked off its rollout in seven theaters across key cities like New York and Los Angeles, garnering $171,242. It is set to expand further on September 27.

Looking ahead, the box office is primed for the release of “Transformers One,” set to hit theaters next weekend. However, a lull in blockbuster releases is expected until “Joker: Folie à Deux” premieres on October 4.

Here’s a recap of the estimated weekend ticket sales in U.S. and Canadian theaters: 1. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” $51.6 million. 2. “Speak No Evil,” $11.5 million. 3. “Deadpool & Wolverine,” $5.2 million. 4. “Am I Racist?”, $4.7 million. 5. “Reagan,” $3 million. 6. “The Killer’s Game,” $2.6 million. 7. “Alien: Romulus,” $2.4 million. 8. “It Ends With Us,” $2 million. 9. “The Forge,” $2 million. 10. “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust,” $1.5 million.
