Baker Mayfield: "Bryce Young's Journey is Just Getting Started!"

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has shown his unwavering support for Bryce Young, the Carolina Panthers' first-round draft pick, after Young faced a tough start to the season, resulting in his benching following two loss-heavy games.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Mayfield stated, “Quarterbacking in the NFL is a tough gig, especially for young players who may not be surrounded by the right team environment.” He acknowledges that while talent and intelligence are vital, the opportunity to flourish is crucial. Mayfield elaborated, “I’ve found a much better fit with the Buccaneers compared to my previous teams – it’s about having the right pieces and coaches around you. I resonate with Bryce on this. His journey is far from over.”

Mayfield, the 2018 first overall pick, has faced his own career rollercoaster–trading teams multiple times before landing his current one-year contract with Tampa Bay in 2023. Originally on the Cleveland Browns roster, he moved to the Panthers in 2022 but had a brief run there before a successful stint with the Los Angeles Rams reignited his career. This season, he has led the Buccaneers to an NFC South title, culminating in a lucrative three-year, $100 million deal.

He attributed much of his resurgence to the stability and supportive coaching staff of the Buccaneers, particularly praising new Panthers head coach Dave Canales—who was instrumental in Mayfield's turnaround as the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator last season. “Canales has an incredible way of uplifting players,” he said. “His positivity is contagious, and he knows how to turn things around when the odds seem stacked against you.”

The Panthers recently decided to bench Young, opting for veteran quarterback Andy Dalton instead. Since being drafted first overall after a significant trade with the Chicago Bears, Young’s record stands at a disappointing 2-16. His initial performance this season was particularly challenging, with a combined score of 73-13 against the opposition and a QBR that ranked as the lowest among qualified quarterbacks in the league.

Mayfield, a known admirer of Young, empathizes with the pressures faced by the rookie quarterback. “With the title of the No. 1 pick comes incredible expectations,” Mayfield explained. “For Bryce, translating his college success into the NFL while commanding respect in a locker room filled with seasoned professionals is no small feat. It requires building relationships and understanding dynamics that go beyond football. But I have full faith in Bryce’s abilities. He has the right mindset, and I believe he will navigate these challenges.”

As the season progresses, Mayfield expressed his anticipation for Young's future, stating, “I’m excited to see how Bryce adapts and grows, although I’d prefer not to see it during our matchups!”

Clearly, both quarterbacks know too well that the NFL journey is filled with ups and downs, and for Young, there’s still plenty of time to turn things around and write his own success story.
