"While an impact on the Moon wouldn't threaten us, it would present an extraordinary chance to witness a lunar impact and its immediate effects," she stated.

"Historically, we know the Moon is pockmarked with craters from smaller impacts, but we've yet to observe a collision from an object exceeding 164 feet (50 meters). This would be spectacular."
This potential lunar collision marks a dramatic shift for asteroid 2024 YR4, which first drew global attention in February when NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) flagged it as a possible threat to Earth.
Refined Measurements and Size Thresholds
At that time, the asteroid, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters, was assigned a Level 3 alert on the Torino Scale, indicating a 1% chance of impact. As calculations were refined, the risk of an Earth impact dwindled, allowing scientists to focus on the Moon's fate.
With the refined measurements indicating a size of around 60 meters, this asteroid surpasses the critical 50-meter size threshold, which prompts alerts from the United Nations Space Mission Planning Advisory Group—dedicated to strategizing responses to potentially hazardous near-Earth objects.

"At this size, an impact could unleash destruction within a radius of up to 62 miles (100 kilometers)," de León cautioned.
