Astounding NASA Images Reveal Gravity Waves from Hurricane Helene Rippling Across the Sky!

In a stunning display of nature's power, atmospheric ripples from Hurricane Helene have been captured in striking images by NASA, showcasing the hurricane’s far-reaching effects even after it made landfall in Florida. The agency's Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) has revealed concentric bands of atmospheric gravity waves spreading across the Southeastern United States, reaching much further than one might expect from the storm's immediate impact.

Principal investigator of AWE, Ludger Scherliess, a physicist at Utah State University, described the captivating phenomena. "Like rings of water spreading from a drop in a pond, circular waves from Helene are seen billowing westward from Florida's northwest coast," he noted, illustrating how the storm's energy radiates outward.

Atmospheric gravity waves are unique vertical ripples that traverse quiet regions of the atmosphere, creating patterns of peaks and troughs within the air. These fascinating waves can develop due to a variety of atmospheric disturbances, including large thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, wind bursts, and even tsunamis. It’s essential to differentiate these from gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by dramatic cosmic events such as black hole collisions.

The AWE is mounted on the International Space Station and is used to detect these gravity waves by measuring airglow—a faint light emitted by gases within the mesosphere, the third layer of Earth’s atmosphere positioned 31 to 53 miles (50 to 85 kilometers) above the surface. This high-altitude observation is particularly important, as most weather phenomena occur in the troposphere, with only the most powerful storms sending their cloud tops into the stratosphere.

These groundbreaking images are just the beginning; since its launch in November 2023, the AWE project aims to deepen our understanding of how surface-level weather phenomena can influence space weather—disturbances in the upper atmosphere primarily triggered by interactions with charged cosmic particles.
