As the vibrant art scene evolves in Asia, painter Chow Chun Fai emerges as a significant voice reflecting on Hong Kong's dramatic political transformation. In his upcoming exhibition, “Interview the Interviewer II,” set to debut in March at Art Basel Hong Kong, Chow challenges contemporary perceptions through powerful artistic interpretations of historical moments.

This exhibition, a collaborative effort with Sharon Cheung, a former television journalist well-acquainted with the region’s diplomatic shifts from 1995 to 2004, revisits pivotal events in Hong Kong’s history. From the ceremonial handover of Hong Kong from British rule to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, to the intimate settings where Chinese leaders once spoke, Chow's work aims to intersect the past with the present, creating a dialogue about the current tense state of U.S.-China relations.

Chow has acknowledged the unavoidable nature of politics in his artwork, remarking, “In Hong Kong, politics is already a part of life.” This sentiment underscores the pervasive environment artists like him navigate, where political realities inevitably bleed into creative expressions. Chow’s past works, including his series “Paintings on Movies,” utilized film stills as platforms for scathing societal critique. However, the current oppressive political climate has necessitated a shift in his approach, prompting him to adopt more subtlety in his artistic endeavors.

A strong advocate for grounding art in reality, Chow expresses a need to pull back and observe. “Being very immersed but also stepping back—this shift has helped me a lot,” he explains, highlighting the balancing act he performs as an artist and as a citizen in today’s world.

In the course of collaboration with Cheung, Chow explored a treasure trove of archival visuals she had collected over the years, analyzing the aesthetics of outdated footage for both color and compositional inspiration. This deep dive into history not only serves to inform his works but is also a journey through the evolution of visual storytelling methods. “I discovered some colors I haven’t seen before,” he shares, pointing to the ways old material can spark a new creative lexicon.

The exhibition also plays with journalistic conventions, moving away from traditional media framing to invite viewers to consider the larger context of the imagery. Chow deliberately leaves out prominent faces, directing attention towards the details often overlooked in conventional news coverage, such as vibrant neckties or candid interactions.

Cheung, whose past evaluations rejected the artistic potential of these “news moments,” is astounded by the life Chow breathes into archival material, transforming once mundane visuals into engaging works of art. She noted, “At first I wondered if old news would be very boring, but at the hands of an artist, the works get a new life and a new meaning.”

Among the poignant pieces, Chow’s works include illustrations that capture historical figures like Jiang Zemin in the heat of unexpected questions or the jubilant celebrations after Tiananmen Square in 2001, marking a time of hope for the city's residents.

The centerpiece of this striking exhibition is a monumental piece depicting the ceremonial handover of Hong Kong. Stretching approximately 2.4 by 3.7 meters (7.9 by 12 feet), it captures the momentous occasion with intensity, placing the act of transfer under the glow of dramatic stage lighting, simultaneously spotlighting the conflicting legacies of both the Chinese and British flags.

As the political landscape in Hong Kong grows ever more complex, Chow Chun Fai's exhibition at Art Basel provides not just a reflection on history, but also a commentary on the present. His innovative reinterpretation of historical moments opens a vital dialogue, forcing viewers to reassess their understanding of Hong Kong's identity in today’s charged atmosphere.
