Earlier studies painted a somewhat conflicted picture of performance between the iPhone 16, equipped with Qualcomm's chip, and the iPhone 16e with the C1 modem. Initial findings suggested that while the C1 performed well in areas with poor coverage, Qualcomm’s modem excelled in high-speed environments.

Latest Findings: Performance Depends on the Network

According to Ookla’s newest study, the performance of a modem is heavily influenced by the supporting network. Notably, Qualcomm supports four-carrier aggregation, allowing for better performance on networks like T-Mobile, which boasts extensive 5G coverage. In fact, speed tests showed that T-Mobile users on the iPhone 16 enjoyed a median download speed of 317.64 Mbps, far surpassing the 252.80 Mbps achieved by users of the 16e.

Global Performance: C1 vs Qualcomm

On an international level, the iPhone 16 consistently outperformed the iPhone 16e in countries with robust 5G infrastructures, such as China and Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, in many locations, their speeds were surprisingly similar.
