Apple's Game-Changing Strategy Unveiled

By moving its assembly operations to India, Apple aims to sidestep the harsh financial impacts of the trade war. However, it's worth noting that India is facing its own set of new tariffs that could complicate matters.

Apple has already ramped up its shipments of iPhones manufactured in India, reinforcing its reserves before any new tariffs went into effect.

Experts, like Angelo Zino from CFRA Research, contend that Apple's shift isn't just a short-term response. "Apple is thinking long-term about manufacturing capabilities," he suggests, anticipating that the company may double its iPhone production in India over the next few years as a strategy to cushion against potential tensions between the U.S. and China.

The Ever-Persistent China Connection

Despite these changes, Zino acknowledges that Apple will maintain a robust presence in China, which still accounts for around 15% of its sales. Additionally, global production of iPhones will remain heavily reliant on Chinese manufacturing.

More than Just Assembly: A Diverse Manufacturing Future

While a total move to U.S. production isn’t feasible financially, Apple could bolster its manufacturing of components like modems and custom-designed processors with Taiwan Semiconductor in the U.S.

Muzammil Hassan from Quandary Peak Research believes Apple's India manufacturing strategy is not merely a temporary fix. With Foxconn already training thousands of workers in Tamil Nadu, there are rumors that the iPhone 17 could be exclusively crafted in India.

Hassan also points out that Apple is somewhat of a latecomer to the manufacturing scene in India, noting that competitors like Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo have long been establishing their own production lines there.
