RAF LAKENHEATH, England — A Historic Ceremony

In a historic ceremony this week, Captain Lacie Hester stood out as one of the 30 remarkable service members honored for her valiant efforts during a significant Iranian missile and drone assault on Israel earlier this year. Notably, Hester has become the third woman since World War II to be awarded the Silver Star—one of the highest military honors for bravery in battle.

Coalition Air Mission

Accompanied by Major Benjamin Coffey, the pilot of the F-15E, Hester participated in a coalition air mission responding to the unprecedented launch of over 300 ballistic and cruise missiles, coupled with one-way attack drones, from Iran on April 13-14. In a gripping account of their mission, they were able to intercept six drones under the cover of night, showcasing extraordinary skill and composure during a highly dangerous operation.

Support from Ground Crew

The ceremony at RAF Lakenheath saw over 150 attendees, including ground crew members who worked tirelessly to support the pilots in their fight. Throughout the operation, Hester and Coffey’s dedication forced them to return to a secure base when one of their missiles failed to launch. Showing unyielding resolve, they took cover in a bunker as the threat loomed.

Resuming the Mission

Fortunately, after receiving word that a replacement F-15 was ready, the mission resumed under chaotic conditions—explosions erupting from intercepted missiles above. With focus and precision, Hester and Coffey re-engaged in the air, expending all available munitions and coordinating with other fighter jets to fend off the ongoing Iranian assault.

Recognition of Teamwork

Lieutenant Colonel Timothy “Diesel” Causey, commander of the 494th Fighter Squadron, noted the impressive teamwork displayed throughout the operation, describing it as a “beautiful symphony of execution.”

Honors and Recognitions

In total, six recipients were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, with a significant number of officers recognized for their extraordinary aerial achievements amidst the threats of war. Captain Hester's honor is even more special as she stands as the first female in the Air Force to earn the Silver Star.

A Moment in Military History

This recognition highlights an essential moment in military history, reminding us of the bravery and skill displayed by women in the armed forces. The previous female Silver Star awardees include notable figures such as Pfc. Monica Lin Brown, who earned her medal in Afghanistan while providing medical aid under fire, and then-Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester, who bravely fought in Iraq during a convoy ambush.

Readiness of the U.S. Military

As tensions continue to rise globally, this ceremony serves as a testament to the readiness and valor of the U.S. military, particularly within the 48th Fighter Wing, known colloquially as the Panthers. General James Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe and Africa, commended the dedication and preparation of his personnel, affirming, “You never know when your time is going to come, but when your time comes, you need to be ready. I'm happy to say the Panthers were ready.”
