Polygon Under New Ownership

Polygon, formerly part of The Verge and a staple in the gaming and entertainment landscape, has officially transitioned to new ownership under Valnet. This company boasts a diverse portfolio of over 27 brands across gaming, entertainment, sports, and travel. Despite the acquisition, the site momentarily retained its Vox Media branding, providing uninterrupted gaming coverage.

Valnet's Vision for Polygon

I had a chance to discuss the acquisition with Rony Arzoumanian, Valnet’s head of mergers and acquisitions. He revealed that Polygon has been on Valnet’s radar for quite some time due to its status as a 'triple-A gaming brand.' With impressive titles like GameRant and TheGamer already under its belt, Valnet is enthusiastic about expanding its gaming portfolio.

Arzoumanian expressed, "We believe Polygon has untapped potential and could evolve into something even greater." The discussions for this acquisition initiated a few months prior, although terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

Expanding Coverage and Team

Looking ahead, Valnet intends to bolster Polygon's reputation as a leading source for in-depth gaming coverage. While specific plans are still unfolding, Arzoumanian assured that they will focus on doing what's best for Polygon.

Currently, around ten existing staff members are transitioning to Valnet, with former executive editor Matt Patches spearheading operations. The company is committed to revitalizing the team and enhancing operations for long-term success.

Hiring Plans and Editorial Strategy

Arzoumanian stated that Valnet aims to recruit top-tier writers and editors for Polygon. Although he remained vague about the balance between full-time hires and contractors, he emphasized their determination to execute the hiring process effectively.

As for the editorial leadership, discussions about appointing a new editor-in-chief are on hold while the immediate focus remains on smooth continuity post-acquisition.

Staffing Changes and Industry Reactions

The sale has led to significant staff changes, including the departure of notable figures like former editor-in-chief Chris Plante. Vox Media's Chris Grant highlighted challenges during the acquisition process, noting that Valnet's management had little communication with him.

When probed about Grant’s comments, Arzoumanian mentioned that communications were primarily managed by Jim Bankoff, Vox Media’s CEO.

Commitment to Archives and Future Innovations

Valnet has made it clear that Polygon’s archives will remain accessible, aiming to avoid the pitfalls that led to the disappearance of Game Informer's archives. Moreover, they dismissed any notion of introducing AI-generated content, a growing trend that has raised concerns in journalism.

A Steady Course Ahead

Reflecting on the future, Arzoumanian anticipates that a year from now, Polygon will largely maintain its current path, with ongoing investments to further develop the brand. As for potential changes like switching to scored reviews, those decisions remain with the operational side of Valnet.
