The Intriguing Orbit of 2017 OF201
The dwarf planet’s orbit is remarkable: its farthest point, or aphelion, is a staggering 1,600 times that of Earth’s orbit. Meanwhile, its perihelion—or the closest point to the sun—is 44.5 times that of Earth, placing it on a trajectory similar to Pluto's.
Exploring the Outer Solar System
The discovery of 2017 OF201 contributes to our understanding of the outer solar system. Beyond Neptune lies the Kuiper Belt, home to icy bodies including Pluto. Studies continue as NASA's New Horizons probes deeper into this icy realm while twin Voyager spacecraft navigate a vast area known as the Scattered Disk, which extends far beyond 1,000 AU (astronomical units) and is filled with celestial objects affected by gravitational forces.
Unraveling the Mystery of Trans-Neptunian Objects
So far, around 5,000 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) have been cataloged, but 2017 OF201 stands out. Currently, it’s 90.5 AU away and can range from 4.14 billion miles at its nearest to a jaw-dropping 157 billion miles from the sun at its farthest. This super long orbital cycle spans an extraordinary 24,256 years!
Can You Believe It's Been Hiding in Plain Sight?
Interestingly, 2017 OF201 last came close to the sun back in 1930, coinciding with the discovery of Pluto! However, given its faintness—estimated at magnitude +20.1—it's clear that earlier astronomers couldn't have spotted it. Thanks to advanced telescopes and surveys like the Dark Energy Survey, this dwarf planet has finally been unveiled.
A Setback for Planet Nine Theorists?
The emergence of 2017 OF201 brings into question the existence of Planet Nine, a hypothetical planet proposed to explain clustering patterns among certain TNOs. The orbit of 2017 OF201 does not conform to these expected patterns, suggesting that it might be too far from the influence of Planet Nine.
Cheng argues that while Planet Nine could destabilize extreme TNOs over millions of years, 2017 OF201 may have only recently reached its current orbit, indicating it might not be affected yet.
A Treasure Trove of Celestial Wonders?
The exciting part? 2017 OF201 may not be alone in its distant territory. For most of its extensive orbit, it's too far to be detected, hinting at a possibility of hundreds of similar objects waiting to be discovered. "This single object suggests there might be many more out there," Cheng noted.
