The excitement is palpable as the IIHF World Junior Championships kick off today in Ottawa, running through January 5th. This premier junior hockey tournament features 10 teams competing fiercely, showcasing the best U-20 talent from around the globe.
Among the teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins are sending three drafted prospects to represent them. Forward Tanner Howe, a second-round pick in 2024, will don the Canadian jersey and hit the ice alongside a duo of Finnish defensemen: Kalle Kangas (seventh round, 2023) and Emil Pieniniemi (third round, 2023).
Unfortunately, Harrison Brunicke, the Penguins’ other second-round pick from 2024, will miss out on this year’s action due to a wrist injury. Thankfully, he’ll have the chance to make an impact in next year’s tournament.
Howe’s selection for the Canadian team has sparked some debate online, as some feel he was chosen over more highly-skilled or higher-drafted players. However, team synergy is crucial at such level, and this tournament isn't merely about showcasing individual talent. It's about building a cohesive unit that can work together effectively.
In a recent exhibition game, Howe’s performance caught the eye of Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis, who praised Howe for his relentless effort on both ends of the ice, including drawing crucial penalties that shifted the momentum of the game. Howe aspires to carve his path in a style reminiscent of NHL stars like Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marchand, promising to be a dynamic and energetic player throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, Emil Pieniniemi has the honor of being named one of four rotating alternate captains for the Finnish squad. Transitioning from Finnish professional ranks to the Ontario Hockey League has allowed him to establish himself as a standout defender this season, making him a key player for Finland.
Although the Penguins do not have any players on Team USA this year, there's a notable connection to the Pittsburgh region. Brandon Svoboda, a former Pittsburgh Penguin Elite player from Westmoreland County, has earned a spot on the American Junior Team. Now playing at Boston University, Svoboda was picked in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.
The first match of the tournament for the Penguins’ prospects will be a thrilling contest between Canada and Finland today at 7:30 PM ET. Fans can also look forward to additional matchups for Team Canada against Latvia on December 27, Germany on December 29, and the highly-anticipated game against the USA on December 31. Team Finland will also be busy, with games against Germany, the USA, and Latvia on their schedule.
Don’t miss the action! In the U.S., you can catch every game on the NHL Network. Tune in and witness these young athletes showcase their potential on the world stage!
