Have you heard the shocking news? Thousands of ASUS wireless routers are under attack by a nefarious botnet! If that’s got you considering a router upgrade, hold your horses! The FBI has just released a list of models you need to steer clear of.
The agency's recent report unveils that hackers are preying on at least 13 outdated routers—primarily from Linksys under the Cisco brand—to create botnets and conceal their malicious activities. These “end-of-life” models are no longer receiving software updates, leaving them wide open to exploitation.
Here’s the kicker: the malware wreaking havoc is called TheMoon, which has been wreaking havoc since 2014. This sneaky malware allows cybercriminals to take control of infected routers from afar, spread their attack to other devices, and hijack web traffic through proxy networks.
The stakes are incredibly high; the FBI has already seized two proxy services, Anyproxy and 5Socks, that were allegedly powered by these compromised devices.
