May 30: A Global Day of Hope for MS Awareness

Kawartha Lakes is joining a worldwide movement this May 30th to shine a spotlight on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) as we observe World MS Day. This year’s powerful theme emphasizes the critical need for timely and precise diagnoses, advocating for faster access to necessary care for those grappling with this challenging disease.

Around the globe, including Canada, a staggering percentage of individuals await proper diagnoses for MS, with 83% of countries indicating issues in early detection. These delays hinder treatment initiation, ultimately impacting health and overall quality of life.

Lydia Makaroff, CEO of the MS International Federation, highlights the urgent need for change: “Numerous individuals battling MS experience delays in their diagnosis due to limited awareness and access to specialists. This initiative is about illuminating these challenges and driving progress.”

The Crucial Role of Early Diagnosis

Catching MS early is vital. While there is currently no cure, timely treatment can decelerate the progression of the disease and alleviate symptoms. An early diagnosis also provides individuals a chance to strategize, make educated choices, and modify their lifestyles for better disease management.

The State of MS in Canada

Canada holds one of the highest MS prevalence rates globally, with over 90,000 Canadians living with the disease. Alarmingly, 12 Canadians are diagnosed every day, with women being three times more likely to be affected than men.

MS, affecting the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, can result in various symptoms such as fatigue, mobility issues, numbness, and cognitive or emotional changes. Every person's experience with MS is unique.

“MS affects countless Canadians, including residents of Kawartha Lakes. This World MS Day, we urge everyone to educate themselves, raise their voices, and show support. Wearing a digital carnation is a simple yet profound gesture—it conveys: we acknowledge you, we support you, and we stand with you,” states Doug Elmslie, Mayor of Kawartha Lakes.

Join the Movement: The Digital Carnation Campaign

This World MS Day, you can be part of a meaningful initiative by taking action through the Digital Carnation Pinning Campaign. The red carnation symbolizes hope for those living with MS.

On May 30, share a digital carnation on your social media platforms to show solidarity. Snap a selfie with a printable carnation or utilize graphics from MS Canada. Don’t forget to tag your post with #TakeActionForMS.

Together We Can Make a Difference
