Incident Details
A startling incident involving a G2 driver in Ottawa has left an 18-year-old facing serious consequences after being caught speeding at an alarming 125 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. The drama unfolded on Bronson Avenue last Sunday when officers from the Ottawa Police Service's Traffic Escort and Enforcement Unit spotted the joyriding teen.
Driver's Excuse
In a surprising twist, the young driver lamented, 'But my dad needs the car for work!' Unfortunately for him, that excuse didn't resonate with the police. As a result, he is now facing charges of stunt driving, which comes with a hefty 30-day license suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.
Crackdown on Reckless Driving
The crackdown on reckless driving didn’t stop there. Over the same weekend, Ottawa police reported multiple instances of drivers engaging in dangerous speeds on both Highway 417 and local roads. One motorist was stopped for speeding at a jaw-dropping 155 km/h on the highway. Police noted the unwise decision of one driver who slowed down as they passed a marked police vehicle only to accelerate back to 155 km/h, unaware of an unmarked patrol car trailing them.
Additional Incidents
Additionally, another driver, who is now facing a second stunt driving charge in 2023, was detected zooming at 144 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Davidson Road, located in Ottawa's south end. The police quipped, 'Out for a Sunday drive? Not for long if it includes doing 64 km/h over the posted limit!'
Concerns and Warnings
Such incidents raise deflating concerns about road safety and the rules of the road being flouted by inexperienced drivers. Authorities urge all drivers to remember that the thrill of speed isn’t worth the potential life-altering consequences of dangerous driving. So, if you're tempted to push the limits, think again – the law is watching closer than ever!
