Why I’ll Never Go Back to Regular Roaming After Experiencing a Canada/U.S. Plan

Last year, I took the plunge and signed up for a Canada/U.S./Mexico phone plan with Public Mobile. Until recently, I had only taken advantage of it in Canada—until my unforgettable trip to Seattle!

Seattle: The Ultimate Test of My Plan

I attended Microsoft’s annual Build developer conference, which turned out to be the perfect opportunity to test the U.S. portion of my plan. Spoiler alert: I was blown away! For anyone who travels frequently, investing in a plan like this is a no-brainer.

Unbeatable Connectivity and Convenience

In Seattle, I was often connected to Verizon's network, enjoying a robust 5G signal that occasionally dipped to LTE. Regardless, my connectivity was reliable, allowing me to use my phone without a hitch—just like I do back home!

Say Goodbye to Jaw-Dropping Roaming Fees

Cost matters, and trust me—these plans save you a fortune compared to daily roaming rates. Major providers like Rogers, Bell, and Telus slap on daily fees ranging from $12 to $16, depending on where you are roaming. Imagine spending $48 for four days in the U.S. at the low end—that’s $13 more than what I pay for a whole month with Public Mobile!

A Collective Frustration

Canadians aren't alone in their discontent over roaming costs. The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) has asked telecom companies to devise plans for slashing roaming fees by October 2024. Interestingly, the Big Three reported that they are

already working on it, despite the fact that their U.S. roaming rates doubled since they introduced these programs in 2017. Furthermore, Freedom Mobile has even launched a petition to voice their concerns about high roaming rates.

Freedom from Roaming Anxiety

But it’s not just about cost; it’s about peace of mind! With a Canada/U.S. plan, there’s no more fretting over data usage or monitoring roaming fees. As soon as you touch down and switch off airplane mode, you’re good to go! No more strategizing around the daily fee, and no more worrying about your next phone bill being sky-high.

This freedom is nothing short of liberating!

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, my trip to Seattle reinforced my decision to fully embrace my Canada/U.S. plan. For travel enthusiasts and anyone who needs reliable connectivity across borders, this option is life-changing. Say goodbye to stressful roaming arrangements and hello to seamless travel connectivity!
