Mosquito Madness: WNV Detected in More Areas!

The Durham Region Health Department is sounding the alarm as the West Nile virus (WNV) has now been confirmed in adult mosquitoes collected from Ajax and Pickering, escalating the total count of infected batches in the area to six this season.

Previously, two positive batches were reported in Clarington and Oshawa. The latest findings from Ajax and Pickering were obtained through weekly surveillance activities conducted by the Health Department from June to September. This proactive monitoring is crucial for public health.

Understanding the Threat: What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. These mosquitoes contract the virus after feeding on birds that carry it. Thankfully, WNV cannot spread from person to person or bird to person.

Stay Safe: Precautions to Take!

While the health risk remains low, the Health Department urges residents to stay vigilant and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites, especially during the twilight hours when these pests are most active. Here are some essential tips:

• Dress in light-coloured long sleeves, socks, and shoes when outdoors.

• Apply insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin.

• Eliminate any standing water around your home to disrupt mosquito breeding.

• Ensure all door and window screens are in good condition to keep these bugs out.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Mosquito Populations

Durham Region is actively working to reduce mosquito populations by applying larvicide treatments in catch basins and areas with stagnant water.
