In a shocking update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a staggering 495 norovirus outbreaks across the United States from August 1 to December 11, 2024. This marks a notable increase compared to previous years, surpassing the outbreak counts recorded during the same periods in 2012-2020 and 2021-2024.

Norovirus, often misguidedly referred to as the 'stomach flu,' is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis, resulting in symptoms such as severe vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. What’s alarming is that this highly contagious virus can spread rapidly, with most individuals developing symptoms just 12 to 48 hours after exposure.

Currently, the predominant strain circulating in this season is GII.17, which accounted for nearly 70% of norovirus outbreaks reported in recent months. Jan Vinjé, head of the CDC's CaliciNet system, notes that while it’s too early to determine if this strain causes more severe illness, lower population immunity might be contributing to the unusual surge in cases.

Children under the age of five, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals are at a higher risk of severe infection. The CDC cautions all individuals to remain vigilant and employ effective prevention methods:

Prevention Methods

1. Wash hands thoroughly and frequently. 2. Cook shellfish thoroughly and wash fruits and vegetables. 3. Clean and disinfect any contaminated surfaces. 4. Wash laundry in hot water.

Additionally, those affected by norovirus should stay hydrated to counteract fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea, with keen observation for signs of dehydration, especially in children.

With the current season setting records for norovirus outbreaks, public health experts are urging everyone to take these preventive measures seriously. As we plunge deeper into the 2024-2025 season, awareness is key! Make sure to stay informed and protect yourself and your loved ones against this dangerous virus.
