Toronto Public Health (TPH) has issued an urgent warning regarding possible exposure to measles at the iconic Ripley’s Aquarium. If you visited the aquarium between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 21, officials advise you to closely monitor yourself for symptoms until May 12.

What You Need to Know About Measles

Measles is not just a simple childhood illness; it's a highly contagious virus that can spread like wildfire. It transmits through the air when an infected individual breathes, coughs, sneezes, or even talks. Disturbingly, the virus can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours, putting unsuspecting visitors at risk.

Recognizing the Symptoms Early

Early signs of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. This is often soon followed by a characteristic red blotchy rash that starts on the face and then spreads across the body. Complications of the virus can be severe, leading to pneumonia, brain inflammation, and even death.

Rising Cases: The Alarm Bells Ringing

This warning marks the third confirmed measles case reported in Toronto this year, highlighting an alarming trend. Just last week, Ontario witnessed a spike with 223 new infections, the highest number reported since the outbreak began. Since October, over 1,200 individuals have fallen ill due to the virus.

Impact on Health Services

Public Health Ontario's latest report indicates that at least 84 individuals have been hospitalized, with 63 of those being children. Tragically, eight patients have needed intensive care, underscoring the outbreak’s severe impact.
