Measles Alert in Regina!
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has confirmed a concerning new case of measles in Regina. Residents are being urged to stay alert due to possible exposure at two specific locations in the city.
Potential Exposure Locations
If you visited Dad’s Organic Market at 425 Victoria Ave. E. on Tuesday, July 15 between 5 and 8 p.m. or Home Depot at 1867 Victoria Ave. E. on Wednesday, July 16 between 4 and 7 p.m., you might have been exposed. The SHA advises monitoring for symptoms for up to three weeks following these dates.
What to Do If You Were Exposed
Those who believe they may have come into contact with the virus, especially the unvaccinated, or anyone unsure of their vaccination status, are encouraged to call HealthLine 811 for guidance and information. It's crucial to stay informed.
Preventative Treatments Available
For individuals who are unvaccinated, pregnant, younger than one year old, or immune-suppressed, preventative treatment is available within six days of exposure. This could be a vital step in avoiding infection.
Understanding Measles
Measles is extremely contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. The virus can also be transmitted through contaminated surfaces. Be aware of symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, fatigue, and a telltale rash that generally appears three to seven days after initial symptoms.
Current Situation in Saskatchewan
Since March 14, Saskatchewan has seen a rise in measles cases, with reports indicating 63 infections as of July 16. Alarmingly, seven cases have resulted in severe health complications requiring hospitalization.
Stay Informed!
As the situation develops, it’s essential to stay informed about your health and the health of those around you. Make sure to keep up with local news and health advisories!
