In a shocking turn of events, a 39-year-old man already banned from driving across Canada has been charged after a reckless series of hit-and-runs in Mississauga, allegedly under the influence of drugs.
The chaos began on June 12, when multiple 911 calls flooded in about a pickup truck dangerously swerving near Dixie Road and the Queen Elizabeth Way. Responding officers quickly located the out-of-control vehicle barreling north in the southbound lanes!
Despite attempts to pull the driver over, he sped away at a breakneck pace, becoming a real threat to public safety. "The driver was seen weaving onto sidewalks, crashing into several cars, and frequently exceeding double the speed limit," the police stated in a vivid press release.
Seeing the extreme danger, law enforcement decided to pursue the suspect, but his wild ride came to an abrupt halt when he crashed into a pole, rendering his truck useless.
In a desperate attempt to flee, he tried to carjack another vehicle but was swiftly apprehended by the officers on the scene.
Investigations later revealed that the truck was stolen and fitted with counterfeit license plates! The driver, identified as Gary Walker of no fixed address, now faces nine serious charges including operating a vehicle while impaired, robbery, and reckless driving.
Walker has a notorious history. He has faced nine provincial driving prohibitions since 2003 and has numerous previous convictions for driving under the influence and while his license was suspended. Since 2012, he has been on a nationwide driving ban.
Bail has been denied, and Walker remains in custody while authorities suspect there may be more victims. They are appealing to the public for any dashcam footage from the incident.
This troubling case raises questions about community safety and the persistent issues surrounding impaired driving.
