Nine Speed Cameras Damaged in Vaughan: A Growing Concern

In a shocking turn of events, York Regional Police are seeking public assistance after nine speed enforcement cameras at three different locations in Vaughan were vandalized. This mischief to public property occurred between January 11 and April 24.

Timeline of Destruction Revealed

The incidents occurred across several dates: January 11 at 2:10 a.m., January 27 at an unknown time, February 3 at 11:20 p.m., February 15 at 12:50 a.m., and April 18 at 10:20 p.m. on Peter Rupert Avenue, close to St. Cecilia’s Catholic Elementary School. Additional incidents were reported on February 5 at 10:20 p.m. and April 24 at 1 a.m. on Hilda Avenue, and February 5 at 10:30 p.m. on New Westminster Drive.

The Cost of Vandalism: Taxpayer Dollars at Stake

Constable James Dickson expressed concern over the impact of these acts, emphasizing, "This damage is costing taxpayers money for repairs." Fortunately, all damaged cameras have been, or will be, fixed and put back into operation, typically within 24 hours.

Arrests Made, But More Help Needed!

So far, police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Vaughan linked to one of the incidents. However, authorities are urging the community to step forward with any additional information on the other incidents as they strive to bring all responsible parties to justice. Constable Dickson warned, "Those found guilty could face significant legal consequences, including jail time."

Why Speed Cameras Matter: Protecting Our Streets

Speeding is a major contributor to serious injuries and fatalities, particularly among pedestrians. As a response, speed cameras are strategically installed in high-risk areas, especially near schools.

New Speed Cameras Just Introduced!

Automated speed cameras were only recently activated in Vaughan's community safety zones on April 23, following an announcement in October 2024. This makes the recent vandalism even more alarming.
